Although, no one can really know for certain it is estimated by the U.S. Mint that between 140 billion and 200 billion pennies are in circulation world wide. That is about $2 billion in copper clad coins, now just think you could be a billionaire in pennies! In contrast, 1 million pennies would be worth $10,000.
Since the first minting of a penny in 1787 to present day the U.S. Mint estimates that there has been a total of 300 billion pennies struck. This tells us that 100 billion have been lost, retired, destroyed, melted or are in collections and jars.
The simple penny carries a great deal of weight, in fact using the estimate of 200 billion in circulation the total weight would exceed 625 tons. If laid flat they will cover nearly 18,000 acres and if stacked they would exceed 197,000 miles.
